Minutes, 18 April 2013
Call to Order was at 18:02, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Prayer. Chapter Chaplain Jim Kelley offered the invocation, followed by a moment of silence for POWs and MIAs.
Roll Call. All chapter officers were present.

Attendance: 39 members including 2 new members:
Don Thomas, a guest, announced he was joining tonight and wanted help with his
application. President Gary Fink offered to assist.
Roger Sanchez, coming in from Sonora, CA, took over as chairman of the Parades
Committee.
Guest. Kyle Scott of the Northern Nevada Veterans Resource Center announced a Spaghetti Feed fundraiser scheduled for 5:30 on 27 April. Tickets are $20 and $2,500 in prizes will be given away. Rick Shuster volunteered to send out the word electronically to all membership and to his other affiliations.
Minutes. The minutes were distributed electronically before the meeting.
Motion. Rick Shuster moved to accept the minutes, seconded by Ron Reinhardt (unanimous).
Reports.
Treasurer’s Report. Treasurer Bob Marshall presented the Treasurer’s Report.
Motion. Mike Miller moved to accept the Treasurer’s report, seconded by Pat Moran (unanimous).
Petty Cash. President Gary Fink presented the Petty Cash report.
President’s Report. President Gary Fink announced tonight would be final nominations and chapter elections. Gary reflected on the chapter history: The chapter was begun in July 2007. Greg Montalvo was the founding member and first president. Bob Marshall began as Sergeant at Arms, served as vice president, served 2 terms as president, and most recently served as chapter Treasurer. Bob is stepping down and is going fishing.
Outreach Committee. Outreach Committee Chairman David Billau was not present but it was reported the chapter did well at the last outreach. David kicked in $60 from his pocket, making the take an even $1,000.
Horticulture Committee. No representatives present at this meeting.
Chapter 388 Report. No Chapter 388 report. Chapter 388 President Rick Arnold was out of town on vacation.
Nevada State Council Report. No State Council Report. Nevada State Council President Terry Hubert was absent, attending VVA meetings in Virginia.
Old Business.
Vietnam Memorial. Rick Shuster reported on Memorial Day services at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley. The service begins at 11:00 and ends at 12:00, followed immediately by the unveiling of the Nevada Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The memorial bears the names of 151 men and 8 nurses who gave their lives.
New Business.
Chapter Elections. Election Chairman Tod Brill conducted final nominations and elections for chapter officers:

Officers were sworn in by Tod Brill. Incoming president John Sheets made a brief nominating speech.

Veterans Guest House Golf Tournament. Monk Mann announced the annual golf tournament. He announced holes can be sponsored for $150 and he is willing to personally put up half the fee.
Motion. Greg Montalvo moved to have the chapter sponsor a hole, seconded by Mike Miller (unanimous).
Summer Salute Car Show. The show will be 25 May. Chapter 388 asked the chapter’s assistance to put up their tent at the car show on the evening before the event. Chapter 388 offered a 50/50 split on the outreach if Chapter 989 would help with the event. Four volunteers are needed for each of set up, outreach, and tear down. Bob Marshall asked if Chapter 989 would need to provide our outreach materials. President John Sheets said no.
Parade Uniforms. Parade committee chairman Roger Sanchez introduced himself to the chapter, saying he was especially committed to Memorial Day. He asked where Chapter 989 would meet. Roger stated he wants to do the even in Fernley, and he wants the chapter to present 18-21 members to march in cadence, in uniform. Roger researched a budget and determined the following:
Boots: $32 Hats: $8
Pants: $32 Shirts: $20 (est.)
Total: $72/ uniform excluding shirts.
Roger stated he had already raise $1090 to buy uniforms and believed he had more money coming. Roger turned over the funds raised to date to Treasurer Gary Fink. Roger stated the order must be placed immediately in order to have the uniforms in time for the Memorial Day events. Outcome was uncertain before meeting adjournment.
Good of the Chapter
S470. Chuck Hagel, Secretary of Defense, cancelled the medal for drone pilots due to veterans’ protest. While there still may be a decoration for this service, it will not rank above those for going in harm’s way.
Wounded Warrior Program: A program designed for wounded and PTSD veterans offering skiing and snowboarding.
