US Army’s 248th Birthday & America’s Flag Day Celebrations at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home
Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 989 hosted a celebration for the 248th Army’s Birthday and Flag Day at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home, Sparks Nevada. The event included displays of vintage military vehicles provided by The National Automobile Museum -The Harrah Collection, the Chapter 989’s Color Guard “Signature” Flag Trailer. A Mounted Flag presentation by Horsemanship for Heroes helped start the salute. The distinguished guest speakers included Colonel Carolyn Hooper U.S. Army (retired). Command Sgt. Maj. James Richardson US Army (retired). CSM Richardson read a poem honoring “Old Glory” the US Flag. The poem is called – I AM THE FLAG – Note- Tap on RED to open webpage link for poem.
Flags were flying, the residents of Veterans home enjoyed beautiful weather and patriotic atmosphere. With 70% of the residents at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home are US Army veterans this event was appreciated and won’t be forgotten. Most of the residents proudly wore Caps for the military branches they served.
Wonderful cakes were prepared for this event with a special saber cake cutting followed by the Associates of Vietnam Veterans of America served the cake indoors.

Color Guard in Action Colonel Scott Hooper on “Shahan” passed the American Flag to Colonel K. Hooper after the National Anthem. In turn the colors went to VVA 989 Color Guard Captain Ray Scow for posting.

They used the saber that was that if LtC Darwin Miller, WWII – Korea & Vietnam veteran and Colonel K. Hooper’s father.
